    ft 480r service manual

Although the display lights up and the digits change as you tune and there is noise out the speaker, it won't receive any signals or produce any power output. The LO is a complex 3 VCO system and as far as I can tell perhaps 2 of the 3 are functioning. Perhaps someone has seen this fault and can short circuit my fault finding for me ? RegardsGood luck, PeterA complex synthesiser is just a lot of simple circuits flying in close formation. Your approach of finding which loops are running and on frequency with a receiver is a very good starting point. You'll likely come to the point where a scope is needed. My old FT480's kicking around in the shack. I don't think it's seen power in 10 years. Must give it a try. Quite nice radios. DavidIt seems the LO buffer stage has no power to it maybe because the out of lock ccts are faulty. But the preceding stage should still be heard on my scanner unless it really is out of lock!!If it's anything like the Kenwood I've just brought back to life there is a lot of electrolytic cap decoupling and they go out of spec.Quite why they were all so far out though remains a mystery. Cheers, Peter This button eventually wears out and needs to be replaced, which is a rather easy process. I've performed the operation four times - takes about 15 minutes. The button is available from Yaesu. Both times, they failed again within a couple of weeks. The upside is the new button is not as quite as tall as the original and requires depressing it below the surface of the case to switch, which prevents accidently turning off the radio.Login to post Anyone could help with the setting. Tks robert I'm not directly familiar with your Yaesu unit but, in most Yaesu transceivers, the SSB chip and control circuit (including diodes) is identified in print on the main board.Contact the local Ham radio club.To do this, you need the local tone codes. They restrict use and will give you their codes with proof of a valid FCC License. A License is fairly easy to obtain, but you must have one.If you have the mike 3-6 inches from the mouth and speak in an even non loud tone, that would help sort that out. I hope that this has helped you. Cheers, PeterThe character codes are test-mode displays that correspond to frequencies (in MHz): A0001-A0640 - 136.000-143.9875 in 12.5 KHz stepsIf, so did that make any crackling noise. Keep doing so until all crackling has disapeared. Do this often as possible when firing up your radio for the day, the more use these controls get, the better. I hope this has answered your query. It's becoming more of a restoration at this rate but I love the style of the radio so I'll keep at it. So far I've found the 2 oscillators in the PLL unit aren't working, rotary encoder needs replacing, top row of push buttons not working (now fixed) and the 11.265MHz oscillator on the Main Unit isn't working either. Now I'm sure the crystals are responsible for the lack of oscillation on all of these oscillators and I'm trying to find out more about them. After looking at the schematics they all appear to be Colpitts oscillators and while looking for new crystals I came across some questions I need help with. The 2 higher frequency oscillators use crystals in the 60MHz region so I think these are likely to be using 3rd or 5th Overtone crystals. My question is are the oscillator circuits using a parallel resonance or series resonance. Looking at the circuits it would seem parallel but I've read that for these frequencies it's more likely to be series. I'd be grateful for any help, I'm just trying to get a better understanding of the circuits in this old thing.I've got an ESR meter to test them, it'll be interesting to see how they've faired. The power lines appear clean on the 'scope, probably with there not being much current draw on receive I'd imagine. However many of the oscillators are dead so I'm looking for a RF generator so I can test the crystals before I go buying replacements. Anybody know if QuartSLab is still going. I've emailed them but haven't received a reply so far.New crystals from QuartsLab. Replaced all the capacitors in the 63.9151MHz oscillator circuit. Removed and tested all the passive components using an Atlas tester, all measured within range. Replaced the trimmer capacitors. Swapped some components over from the other 64.595MHz oscillator circuit for testing. None of these changes worked and I was at a loss, I had checked every component and it still refused to oscillate. However looking over the schematic I noticed that the 64.

595Mhz oscillator had a 470R resistor in the emitter chain rather than the 1K resistor that the 63.9151Mhz oscillator had. So I paralleled another 1K resistor across R27 and boom, the oscillator started working. I'm unsure why changing this resistor from the spec'd value brought it back to life as all the components in the oscillator were checked and found to be within tolerance. Suggestions welcome. I just have to set up the trimmer caps TC02 and TC03 which will be fun considering you have to get them down to the nearest 10Hz and the frequency display doesn't even show you the 10Hz digit. And you have to wait 10 seconds between readings on the frequency counter. Brilliant. Activity Breeds Activity. With the leaking caps in mind I spoke to the owner and suggested a full recap and realignment which he agreed to go ahead with as he really wanted to keep this radio going. I started by stripping the radio down to separate PCB level. Now this may seem a bit overkill but experience tells me that the wires in this set are old and therefore brittle, easily broken.

Freeing off the PCB's removes this factor and allows me to get access to all the old caps. Once the caps had been replaced I put the radio back together. Once it was powered up it didn't work. A gentle movement on the PLL board the radio came to life. Dry joints brought on with moving the PCB about was the cause. A small amount of rework was done which cured that issue. This proves how delicate these old sets are. Moving on the realignment was done and the radio is working fine and sounding great. FP-80A for 10W model. Second Hand Yaesu FP-80A DC power supply.
